Snowkiting Portage Flats

Posted by: | Comments (0)

1/29/18 Portage Lake just froze over yesterday! This is great news for the Snowkiting community of South Central Alaska. Portage lake is a world class destination not only for Snowkiting but for Cross Country skiing, Fat tire biking, Ski jouring and any human powered activity since no motorized vehicles are allowed in the Portage lake area of the Chugach National forest.

Below is a video of 5 local Snowkiters taking advantage of a recent storm that left behind of 8″ dry powder on Portage flats. The wind was gusting between 10mph and 25mph. We would consider that wind up and down and gusty. Right on the hairy edge of enjoyable Snowkiting. Regardless the fearless locals took advantage of the gusty wind and powder!

Snowkiting lessons on Big Lake

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Big lake has been to go to spot for early winter snowkiting! While lakes closer to Wasilla get scoured down to bare ice after major wind storms, Big lake tends to keep its snowpack – perfect for a snowkiting playground!

Over Thanksgiving weekend several of us had a chance to fly around the lake with kites, skis and snowboards. We had student, Brendan come down from FBX to learn to Snowkite with the Alaska Kite Adventures crew. On his first day learning, Brendan was able to master the 3.0m trainer kite and progress to full on riding behind a 2017 7m Ozone frenzy!

Overall, we had great wind and snow conditions with winds blowing a steady 15-17mph Out of the NNW

2018 Snowkite Season waking up!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The 2017/18 Snowkite season if officially on! Come out with Alaska Kite Adventures and let us teach you how to snowkite!! Ages 10 and up. No experience necessary. If you are already a skier or snowboarder you have won half the battle! We teach you to fly our Ozone snowkites on foot first then we will progress to adding skis or snowboard. Our Snowkite 1 lesson is the perfect all around package @ 450.00 for 6 hrs of snowkite instruction. We like to break the snowkite lesson into 2 or 3 day blocks. Therefore the student gets to experience possibly 2 different locations and different wind, surface and weather conditions. We chase wind! Lesson locations are different every day. We teach at many different snowkiting locations between Talkeetna and Homer focusing on the Anchorage and Matanuska Valley. Photo Dan Young

Most of this film is shot at Thompson Pass, Alaska – the venue for the Thompson Pass Snowkite festival in April.
This film shot by the Jackson Hole Kiters, captures the essence and potential of snowkiting. An incredibly well put together piece that showcases the history and the future of our sport.
